How to Use a Leveling Rake on Clay Soil

First identify why the lawn is uneven. The following sequence applies to shallow low spots that can be corrected with a thin topdressing. Deep holes, drainage problems, and substantial settlement need a separate repair plan.

  1. Mow within the safe range: Shorter foliage can help material reach the surface, but do not cut below the recommended height for the grass species.
  2. Address confirmed compaction: Only aerate where the soil is actually compacted.
  3. Apply a compatible topdressing: Use material suited to the existing soil and apply a layer thin enough that grass remains visible. A rolling mesh spreader is one way to distribute screened compost.
  4. Work the rake: Push and pull in more than one direction to distribute material into shallow depressions. Avoid burying turf or using the tool to cut down substantial high spots.
  5. Finish the surface: Brush material off the grass blades, water as appropriate, and seed only where the repair leaves bare soil and the timing suits the grass species.

A leveling rake can make thin topdressing more even, but some depressions require more than one light application to avoid smothering the lawn.
